View AllWhat "eco-friendly" actually means on a product
Sustainability claims vary widely across the promotional products industry, so it's worth knowing what you're looking at before you order.
Here are the most common material types and what they mean in practice:
- Recycled materials (rPET, recycled cotton, recycled paper) - made from post-consumer or post-industrial waste. rPET is the most common: it's plastic bottles turned into fabric for bags, bottles and lanyards.
- Organic materials (organic cotton, organic bamboo) - grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. Relevant for apparel, tote bags and some stationery.
- Sustainably sourced materials (FSC-certified wood, bamboo) - sourced from forests or crops managed to prevent depletion. Common in pens, USB drives and desk accessories.
- Biodegradable materials - break down naturally at end of life. Less common in branded merchandise but available in some packaging and stationery lines. If you need to verify the credentials of a specific product for a tender, procurement brief or ESG report, ask us and we'll provide the relevant certification details.
How to avoid greenwashing when buying branded merchandise
The biggest risk when buying eco merchandise is paying a premium for a product that carries an eco label but has no third-party verification behind it.
A few things to check before you brief a supplier:
- Does the product have a recognised certification, such as GRS (Global Recycled Standard), FSC, GOTS or OEKO-TEX?
- Is the claim specific ("made from 50% recycled PET bottles") or vague ("eco-friendly materials")?
- Can the supplier provide documentation if your procurement team asks for it?
We can provide certification details on request for any product in this range. If a product does not carry a recognised certification, we'll tell you that upfront rather than let you assume otherwise.
